Alan I. Haferbecker, 77, of Oshkosh passed away on Monday, January 19, 2003 at Aurora Medical Center. He was born in Antigo on March 24, 1926, son of the late Irving and Amanda (Braeger) Haferbecker. Al was united in marriage with Patricia J. Geerdts on January 26, 1950 in Nome, Alaska. She preceded him in death on February 1, 1986.
Al enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17 and served during World War II. His career in the FAA took him to many locations around the country. He lived in Alaska for 18 years and experienced many wonderful outdoor activities. He enjoyed playing Bridge, other card games and was a Hi-Fi enthusiast. His friendship with Jenny Rice during recent years was a source of joy for he and his family.
His memory will live on through his special friend, Virginia Rice of Oshkosh; children, Gail (Len) Clark of Downers Grove, Illinois, Paul (Linda) Haferbecker of Grantsburg, Wisconsin, Jill (Thomas) Smetana of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, Julie (Rob) Winters of Eagan, Minnesota and Mark Becker of Chicago, Illinois; sisters, Phyllis (Emerson) Schilcher of Phoenix, Arizona and Jane Schmidt of Antigo; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. He is further survived by members of Pat s family along with many nieces and nephews on both sides. He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia McKeon.
A memorial celebration of his life will be held at 4:00 PM on Thursday, January 22nd, at the Seefeld Family of Funeral Chapels, 1025 Oregon Street. The Rev. Joy Mortensen-Wiebe will lead the commemoration. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Seefeld Oregon Street Chapel on Thursday beginning at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
