Dr. Benjamin S. Greenwood M.D., age 92, of Oshkosh, passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2007 following a brief illness. He was born on August 28, 1915 to Samuel G. and Charlotte (Edgerton) Greenwood in Black Wolf Township, Wisconsin. He grew up in Peoria, Illinois, earned his undergraduate degree from University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana and went on to receive his Medical Degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
A WWII Army veteran, Dr. Greenwood served in the European Theatre as a flight surgeon. At the end of the war, he settled in Oshkosh with his wife, Betty Jean (Leggett) Greenwood. A partner in the Oshkosh Clinic for over 30 years, he specialized in Internal Medicine. Dr. Greenwood was affiliated with Mercy Hospital and taught at its School of Nursing. He was a life-time member of the Wisconsin Physicians Society.
Dr. Greenwood, an avid boater, spent many summers cruising on the Great Lakes with his family. An accomplished woodworker, Ben designed and created custom furniture, boat furnishings, and lathed woodwork, all of which continues to be enjoyed by family and friends. His love of boating and woodworking began as a teenager when he built a 15-foot sailing boat at the family cottage on Lake Buttes des Morts.
Dr. Greenwood is preceded in death by his first wife Betty in 1974. Their son, Robert Edward "Butchie" Greenwood, drown in a tragic accident on Lake Winnebago in 1957. His second wife, Lola Morgan Greenwood, died in 2005.
He is survived by his son, John M. Greenwood, of Seattle, Washington; and a daughter, Susan G. Greenwood, of Miami, Florida.
Private burial services will be held at Ellenwood Cemetery in Oshkosh.
