Carlene M. Gunning, 87, of Oshkosh, died Friday, February 29, 2008 at Evergreen Retirement Community - Creekview South. Carlene was born December 24, 1920 in Norfolk, Virginia, the daughter of Charles and Carlene (Shout) Woody. After her family moved north in her teens, Carlene graduated from Oshkosh High School and went on to attend Oshkosh State Teachers College. On a weekend visit to UW-Madison, she met and fell in love with John (Jack) Graham Gunning. Following graduation, the couple married on January 31, 1942 at St. John's Catholic Church in Oshkosh.
In addition to her role as a loving wife, homemaker and mother, Carlene was involved in several civic and social organizations. She was an active member of the Visiting Nurse Association, the American Red Cross, the Oshkosh Country Club, the Fireside Antique Club and St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Carlene and her daughter-in-law, Patrice Gunning. Her husband Jack preceded her in death September 12, 1988. She is survived by her son, Timothy J. Gunning, Grapevine, Texas and his children Kathleen M. Gunning, Grapevine, Texas and Christopher J. (Tracie) Gunning, Tokyo, Japan. She is also survived by her daughter Marcy G. (Bob) Coglianese, Oshkosh. She is further survived by her sister, Dorothy Spanbauer, Waupaca as well as 6 nieces and a nephew.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family memorial mass and interment will follow in the summer.
