Obituary

Charles P. Mader (Chuck) passed away May 3, 2015. He was born June 14, 1920, the son of the late Gilbert L. and Ester G. Mader, in Oshkosh. He graduated in 1938 from Appleton High School and completed the Agricultural Short Course at UW-Madison. His working days were spent in the food business – retail produce manager, selling on the road, and as a buyer for a wholesale grocer and later a bakery warehouse. He spent much of his 4 years active duty in the Pacific during WWII and 23 years in the army reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. On December 1, 1941, he married Ruth G. Baurenfeind (deceased). He later married Norma L. Widmer (deceased), on August 30, 1968.
He was an active member of Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He was a trustee, sang in the choir, ushered, and volunteered in a number of ways. He delivered Meals on Wheels and enjoyed working at the EAA for many years. He and Norma made many trips throughout the country, including a number of Elder Hostels in various states. They were members of a local square dance group and enjoyed the camaraderie and the entire square dance experience. He was part of the Evergreen Retirement Community for nearly 10 years, where he participated on different boards and committees, worked in Manor Mart, spent time with third graders from Webster Stanley, and took pleasure in many social activities.
He is survived by 2 sons: Thomas (Nancy), Appleton; James, Steamboat Springs, CO; 2 daughters: Nancy (Robert) Lidwin, Waukesha, Kim (Gary) Kilishek, Neenah; 3 stepchildren: Ronald (Blanche) Widmer, Oshkosh; Judy (Robert) Voss, De Pere; Brian (Marie) Widmer, Lakewood, CO; 14 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and 6 great, great grandchildren. He is survived by 1 brother: Marvin (Peggy), Pewaukee; and preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Babcock.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., May 11th at Evergreen Retirement Community, 1130 N. Westfield Street, Oshkosh. A memorial service and military honor guard will be held at 10:30 in the adjoining chapel. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the charity of your choice.
