Chester Andrew Thums, age 83, of Omro, died at home surrounded by the love of his family on Monday, August 14, 2017. He was born April 18, 1934, in Greenwood, the son of Leo and Anna (Hoffmann) Thums. Chet attended and was educated in the Taylor County Schools and Rib Lake Catholic School. He came down to the Fox Cities area for work. He married Louise Bradley on March 12, 1960 at Elo Methodist Church in Pickett. Chet had farmed with various farm families including the Tipler and Weiss families. He hauled cattle to Indiana and drove trucks for canning factories hauling sweet corn to Ripon, Winneconne and Rosendale. Chet also worked at the Ripon Cookie Factory and Universal Foundry in Oshkosh for 27 years. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union Local 345. During layoff times Chet worked as a carpenter, construction and Gibson Roofing Co. He purchased his own farm in 1969 and was proud that he had built a quality herd of cattle. Chet milked for 21 years while at the same time raising Angus cattle, and growing corn and soybeans. He also loved gardening and sharing his bounty with neighbors and friends. Chet was an avid hunter, hunting deer, bear and raccoon. He also enjoyed fishing and went on fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada.Chet is loved and will be missed by his wife of 57 years, Louise and their four children; Shari (Frank) Sanchez, Thomas (Brenda) Thums, Patti (Randy) Radig and Scott (Teena) Thums; grandchildren, Christina, Andrew (Crystal) , Anna (Travis), Holley, Dorothy, Kenny (Krystie), Shelbi; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Camden; sister, Isabelle; brother in law, Ben; sister in law, Betty; 2 brothers in law; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Anna; grandson, Randall; granddaughter, Amanda; brothers, Alvin (Audrey) and Elmer (Sarah); sisters, Adeline and Florence (Andy) and dear friend, Florian Krueger.Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2017, at the Omro Funeral Home from 4:00 P.M. until the time of the funeral service at 7:00 P.M. with Rev. Neil Wilson officiating. Private family burial will take place at Omro Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial in his name is being established.
