Donald A. Rhode, age 85, of Oshkosh, died Monday evening, January 12, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center. Born on July 21, 1923, in North Fond du Lac to Herman and Irene (Anderson) Rhode, Don married Gloria Lutz on September 20, 1947. In 2008 they celebrated 61 years of marriage together.
A graduate of North Fond du Lac High School, Don served with the U.S. Army Transportation Division in New Guinea, South Philippines, and Luzon from 1943-1946. He was a long time truck driver, employed by Wilbur Pfeifer Trucking Company of Fond du Lac for 35 years before retiring from Oshkosh Truck Corporation in 1989. Don was a member of First English Lutheran Church, VFW, and UAW Local 578.
An avid sports fan, Don enjoyed following the Brewers, Bucks, and Packers. During a Brewer's televised game, Don was wished a "Happy 85th Birthday". Bowling, bicycling, and polka music (listening and dancing to) rounded out Don's leisure time. Family and friends were important to Don, and he made friends wherever he went, talking and joking with everyone.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Gloria Rhode; a daughter, Sharon Rhode; two sons, Dennis Rhode and Keith (Linda) Rhode; grandchildren, Shelby (Jerod) Lloyd and Lance (Shelly) Rhode; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Evan, Emma Lu, Malley, Greysen, and an expected new arrival on February 2nd; a brother, Harland Rhode; a sister-in-law, Gay Rhode; and many nieces and nephews. Precedeing Don in death are his parents; a sister and her husband, Karen and Robert Parker; a brother, James Rhode; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Rhode.
A service remembering Don's life will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. in Seefeld Family of Funeral Chapels, 1025 Oregon Street, with Reverend Timothy Greenwald officiating. Private family interment services will be held at Ledgeview Memorial Park in Fond du Lac. A time of visitation and sharing of memories will be held on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel. A memorial in Don's memory is being established by his family.
