Eleanor J. Lovell, 78, of Omro, left her earthly life and went home to be with the Lord Sunday, Oct. 26, after a long battle with Lewy Body Disease. She was a resident of the Omro Care Center.
The former Eleanor Adams was born March 22, 1930, in Oshkosh, the daughter of the late Walter and Lillian (Strehlow) Adams, who farmed in the Omro area for many years. She graduated from Omro High School in 1947 and was salutatorian of her class. She attended the Oshkosh Vocational School. Eleanor married Darwin Lovell on Sept. 17, 1949, in Omro, where they spent most of their married life.
She was a bookkeeper for the Omro School District for 21 years before her retirement in 1985. She then worked part-time for the Winnebago Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. She was also a guardian for several local people and was a hospice volunteer.
Eleanor was actively involved in her church, First Presbyterian Church of Omro. She was choir director for 36 years, taught children and adults in Sunday School, and served on Session and various presbytery and synod committees. She was passionate about music and evangelism.
She was also active in the community. She was a member of the Omro Study Club and American Field Service. She sang with the Oshkosh Choraliers for many years.
Eleanor's interests were varied. She enjoyed gardening and delighted in the beautiful flowers, roses especially, that graced her yard. She was an avid reader, especially of Christian literature. She loved to sing and studied piano in her retirement. She and Darwin frequently attended plays, musicals, and concerts, and were avid dancers. They were members of the Timber Toppers square dancing club in Oshkosh for a number of years.
She also loved to travel. She and Darwin visited 49 of the 50 states (only missing Hawaii) and various provinces in Canada, catching a few World's Fairs along the way. They went to Europe several times. She also enjoyed chronicling their travels and kept many scrapbooks and journals of their journeys. Closer to home, she shared many wonderful times with Darwin, other family members, and friends at the Lovell cottage on Lake Seventeen in Hazelhurst. She loved the serenity, beauty, and wildlife of the area.
Eleanor was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and a devoted friend. She was married to Darwin for 59 years. They were blessed with 3 sons: Kevin (Kay), of Wausau; Randy (Tracey), of Oshkosh; and Alan, of Columbia, SC. They have six grandchildren: Jaclyn Lovell, Anne Lovell, and Kurt Lovell, all of Madison; Ryan (Katie) Lovell, of Johnson Creek; Lindsay Lovell, of Oshkosh; and Christopher Lovell, of Wausau; and one great-granddaughter, Elise Lovell, of Johnson Creek.
Also surviving are one brother, Harlin (Marge), of Clinton, MS; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Merlynn and Dorothy Lovell, of Omro; an aunt, Doris Strehlow, of Omro; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In respect to Eleanor's memory, the family will greet relatives and friends at the Kwiatkowski Funeral Home, 425 Jefferson Ave., Omro, on Friday, October 31, from 4-8 p.m. and then again on Saturday, November 1, at the First Presbyterian Church, 955 N. Webster Ave., Omro, from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. when the funeral service will be held. The Rev. Edward Slusser will officiate. Eleanor will be laid to rest in the Omro Junction Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the music program of First Presbyterian Church of Omro.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Omro Care Center, Webster Manor, and Heartland Home Health Care and Hospice for their loving care.
