Emma Mathias, 102, passed peacefully Tuesday, January 30, 2024, in the comfort of her daughter Jody's home in Wautoma, Wisconsin.
Her life began November 12, 1921, in Garrison, North Dakota. One of five children born to Edward and Helena Mautz. Emma married John Mathias on June 2, 1942. They had 5 children; Gerald Mathias, Phyllis Watters, Jeff Mathias (Cheryl), Ingrid Leuthold (Wayne), and Jody Kohlhoff (Dan Longsine) – 9 grandchildren; Julie Watters, Jason Mathias, Justin Mathias, Estee Mathias, Dan Smith, Dylan Kohlhoff, Courtney Kohlhoff, Chelsea Kohlhoff and Janae Leuthold – 12 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Emma is preceded in death by her parents, husband, John; son, Gerald; grandchild, Julie; and her four brothers, Reuben, Herb, Fred and Albert Mautz; and sister Lydia McKee. In addition to her brothers-in-law, Rudy, Edwin, Alvin, Tony and William Mathias; and sisters-in-law Edna Haas and Theresa Mautz. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Alice Kohn (Mathias).
The love Emma had for her children and grandchildren was infinite. Her work ethic unmatched; passionately tending her garden and canning the harvests well into her 90's. She found pleasure from the simple things in life, never caring for materialistic things or wavering in her values. The sorrow her family feels from the loss of their beloved matriarch is incomprehensible. We continue to find solace knowing her spirit lives on in eternal life and in the cherished memories of her loved ones.
Services for Emma will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Seefeld Funeral Home. Visitation is from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, with service to follow.
We would like to thank the Thedacare hospice team who tended to her during her final days. Emma always expressed utmost gratitude and never complained; she truly had a heart of gold.
