Obituary

Ervin F. Portman Sr., of Oshkosh, died Tuesday morning at Mercy Medical Center at the age of 87. Ervin was born on November 3, 1918 to Frank and Matilda (Kern) Portman in Sherwood, Wisconsin. He married Valeria West on February 15, 1941 in Appleton, Wisconsin. Together they had eight wonderful children. Val preceded him in death on October 30, 1990.


Ervin led a very fulfilling life. In his early years he was a well-known milkman for Farnwald Farms. He was also the Vice President of an insurance company, Garot Christman Agency of Appleton, for many years. He retired in 1984. Ervin was a very active member at St. Raphael Catholic Church and a past member of the Oshkosh Catholic Order of the Knights of Columbus. He was a very family orientated man, a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Ervin provided skilled storytelling and was a great conversationalist. He was an avid gardener and also enjoyed hunting and fishing.


Ervin is survived by 7 children; Gerald (Julie) Portman of Wheaton, IL, Lee (Leanne) Portman of Fond du Lac, Susan (Jerry) Woodson of Neshkoro, WI, Barbara (Reverend Dean) Einerson of Rhinelander, Beverly (Jim) Campbell of Middleton, Ervin (Susan) Portman Jr. of Cary, North Carolina, and Patricia (Karl) Linck of Kohler. He is further survived by 23 grandchildren, including Jean (Keith) LeMahieu of Pound, WI and Randy (Karene) Bleicher of Sauk City, WI, and 22 great-grandchildren. Ervin is also survived by a brother and a sister; Rosie Straussman of New Holstein and Joseph (Fran) Portman of Kaukauna. He was preceded in death by his wife Val; a son, Jim; a brother, Norman, and his parents.


Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 22, 2006 at 11:30 AM at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 830 S. Westhaven Drive. Father Dan Felton will be officiating. Friends may gather for memories and support at the church from 9:30 AM until the time of service. Entombment will take place at Lake View Memorial Park. A memorial has been established in Ervin's name.
