Eugene D. "Gene" Schroeder, age 77, of Oshkosh, went quietly into the arms of his loving Savior, on Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at Aurora Medical Center, after many years battling illness. Born on January 28, 1932, in Dale, Wisconsin to William and Magdelena (Krenke) Schroeder, Gene was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Dale, Wisconsin.
Serving in the U.S. Occupational Army in Germany after the Korean War, Gene traveled into 13 countries as a civilian in the Signal Corps. On September 24, 1955, Gene married Marjorie Spiegelberg at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Dale, Wisconsin. He worked for various companies during his younger years and always in sales. Gene found his passion in selling cars for over 40 years - at Airway Auto Sales and Mueller Chrysler, both of Oshkosh, and Frank Motors in Fond du Lac. Many of his customers became life-long friends. Many cars were sold by Gene to pastors and missionaries all over the world.
A WELS Lutheran his entire life, Gene started singing in the choir from the time he was confirmed, until his health deteriorated these last few years. He also served on the Wisconsin Synod Board for Home Missions for 32 years and served several terms on the church council as President of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Left to mourn Gene's passing are his wife, Marjorie Schroeder of Oshkosh; four children, Paul (Jody) Schroeder of Oshkosh, Lisa (Robert) Ensley of Fairfield, California, Marjean Schroeder of Oshkosh, and David (Nita) Schroeder of Oshkosh; his mother-in-law, Loretta Spiegelberg of Oshkosh; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Schroeder, Amanda (Ian) Morrison, Adam (Tiffany) Schneider, Luke (Kaity) Schneider, Cadie (Tom) Roszak, Alysha Schroeder, Patrick (Melissa) Ensley, Kyle Ensley, and KC Ensley; five great-grandchildren, Naomi and Lily Schneider, Wyatt, Garrett, and Jack Ensley; three sisters, Elvira Pavlak, Delores Scott, and Phyllis Gorges; a sister-in-law, Leslyn (George) Spiegelberg Austin; and many wonderful nieces and nephews who were an important part of his life. Preceding Gene in death are his parents, father-in-law, Lester Spiegelberg, and three brothers, Erich, Elmer, and Orvan Schroeder.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. in Immanuel Lutheran Church, 338 North Eagle Street, with Reverend David Pagel officiating.
