Evelyn O. Mitchell, age 86, of Oshkosh, passed away at Aurora Medical Center early Thursday morning July 23, 2009. She died peacefully in her sleep in the presence of her three surviving children and other family members.
Evie was born November 21, 1922 in Racine, Wisconsin the offspring of immigrants from Copenhagen, Denmark. Her family moved to Chicago where her father worked as a carpenter during the Great Depression. She attended technical school and became a secretary to help her family make ends meet. While traveling via train from St. Paul in 1945 she met Navy man Jack Mitchell returning to his post at Great Lakes Training Station. This was the beginning of a 54 year love affair. The couple moved to Oshkosh in 1950 and were active members of the community ever since. The couple enjoyed their family of 4 children, 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Jack preceded her in death in 1999.
Jack and Evie were active members at Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church since 1953; where Evie eventually shared the responsibility as church secretary. In her later years, she enjoyed helping her son, Jim in his insurance agency. Church activities were a big part of her life. She held many leadership positions in various groups. She was active in P.E.O.
Evie and Jack were avid Packer fans. She loved spending time with family, grandchildren and friends. She always had a "Danish good time". She touched the lives of everyone she met with her caring and generous heart.
Evie leaves behind her 3 surviving children: John B. Mitchell III MD (Stephanie Morse) of Sacramento, California, Sally A Gapinske (Tom) of Lino Lakes, Minnesota, and James R. Mitchell (Lori) of Oshkosh; 11 grandchildren: Sarah Kinsey-Davis, Anne Kinsey-Beeson, Jacob Kinsey, Kathryn Kinsey, Jennesa Kinsey, Ashley Mitchell, J.B. Mitchell, Jeffrey Gapinske, Lisa Gapinske, Justin Mitchell and Chase Mitchell; 4 great grandchildren; Tegan Davis, Tristen Davis, Kierra Beeson and Fionnegan Beeson. She is also survived by brother, Don Olsen (Judy); son-in-law, James A. Kinsey and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Mitchell. Evie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack, and eldest daughter, Dr. Susan Kinsey.
A memorial service celebrating Evie's life will begin at 2:00 P.M on Sunday, July 26th at Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church 1174 Algoma Boulevard. Visitation begins at 1:00 P.M. After the service, family and friends will gather at the church for fellowship and a luncheon. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery.
