George F. Oaks, Jr., age 80, of Oshkosh, went to meet his Lord Monday evening, November 10, 2008 at Bethel Home. He was born on March 14, 1928 in Oshkosh to George F. and Helen A. (Rohrbeck) Oaks, Sr. After graduating from high school George joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served 3 and a half years. He also attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. George married Juanita L. Rogers in 1953 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Oshkosh.
George was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 27 years at the Oshkosh branch in the mechanical maintenance department, fixing the mail sorting machines. He was a long time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, having served on numerous committees and holding various church offices. George was active with Pioneer Boys, serving as a leader and treasurer. He also belonged to NARFE and was president for 8 years and a member of APWU and AARP. George was an avid sports fan, enjoyed doing puzzles, and he loved his family.
Left to mourn his passing is his wife, Juanita Oaks of Oshkosh; four sons, Richard (Beth) Oaks, David (fiancee-Cheri Mays) Oaks, George (Judy) Oaks III, Gerald (Brenda) Oaks; daughter-in-law Deb Oaks; eleven grandchildren and three great granddaughters; two sisters, Lorraine Weiner and Jacquie Nonweiler; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding George in death were two sons, Robert and Thomas Oaks, his parents, and two brothers-in-law, Edgar Weiner and Richard Nonweiler.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 14, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 338 North Eagle Street, with Reverend David Pagel officiating. Interment will follow the service in Riverside Cemetery. A time of visitation and sharing of memories will be held on Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the church.
