Gertrude H. "Girl" Hencke, age 96, of Oshkosh, died Monday morning, February 14, 2011, at Bethel Home. Born on January 4, 1915, in the Township of Eldorado to John and Marie (Schultz) Schumacher, Gertrude married Melvin Hencke on August 26, 1940. Gertrude and Melvin spent 47 years living the good and not so good times together until Melvin's death on June 29, 1988.
A very good cook, Gertrude was a great hostess and the life of the party. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a high priority for Gertrude as she was well-known for playing cards (especially Rook and Parcheesi) and other games. As the third youngest of 11 children, Gertrude was an active and willing helper for her sisters in their later years. She was proud of her Lutheran upbringing and was a long time member of Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Mourning their mother's death is a son, Dan (special friend, Donna Holm) Hencke and a daughter, Joan (Willie) Kruchten; four grandchildren, Marie Weber, Myrna (Tom) Nolte, Mark (Debbie) Hencke, and Mitchell (Roxann) Hencke; five great-grandchildren, Leah and Bradley Weber, Preslee Nolte, Jacob Hencke, and Rachael Hencke. Preceding Gertrude in death is her husband, parents, six sisters and four brothers.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 18, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. in Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1526 Algoma Blvd., with Reverend Jeffrey Berg officiating. Entombment will take place at Lake View Memorial Park. Family and friends may gather at the church on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until time of services.
