Gilbert J. Spanbauer, age 86, of Oshkosh, died Tuesday morning, December 21, 2004 at Park View Health Center. He was born on August 13, 1918 in Oshkosh. Gilbert married Ruth E. Tomlitz on February 6, 1942 in Oshkosh and she preceded him in death on January 12, 1996.
Gilbert was a member of First United Methodist Church. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Oshkosh Teacher's College and a Master of Education Degree from Northwestern University. Gilbert taught math at Winneconne and Westfield School Districts and later at Merrill Middle School, before finishing his career at Oshkosh High School in June of 1982. He enjoyed sports, especially coaching and refereeing basketball, raising roses, duck carving, hunting and fishing, and competitive bridge card playing with his wife. Gilbert was a 51-year member of the Oshkosh Masonic Lodge where he served as Master in 1953. He was also a member of Elk Lodge #292 and served as an Oshkosh Town Board Supervisor.
Survivors include one son: Mark Spanbauer of Oshkosh; one daughter: Lynn (Steve) Marcks of Cincinnati, Ohio; four grandchildren: Jamie (Diane) Resch of Las Vegas, Nevada; Nicolas Resch of New London, Wisconsin; John Spanbauer and Matt Spanbauer both of Oshkosh.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 23, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in Seefeld Family of Funeral Chapels, 1025 Oregon Street, with Reverend Harry Naden officiating.
