Obituary

Glen J. Kemp Sr., affectionately known as Coach "Red" Kemp, age 86, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin died Thursday, November 24, 2011 at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. He was born on May 20, 1925 in Algoma, Wisconsin, son of Edward and Ella Kemp.
He attended Algoma High School and after graduating, Glen proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and received a Presidential Unit Citation for his duty as a Sonar Operator on the U.S.S. Sentry. Following his service in the Navy, Glen returned home and earned his degree from St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. While in school, he married Joan M. Stade on November 22, 1947 at St. Mary Church in Algoma, Wisconsin. He played both football and basketball at St. Norbert and was selected as an All-American in football. He was subsequently inducted into the St. Norbert Athletic Hall of Fame. Upon graduation, Glen worked in the insurance business in Bay City, Michigan. He and his family moved to Casco, Wisconsin where Glen began his coaching and teaching career at Casco High School. In 1961, the Kemp family moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where he taught and coached multiple sports at Lourdes High School until his retirement in 1987.
Glen treasured family. In retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He played countless rounds of golf and took numerous trips to Las Vegas, along with playing competitive family Sheepshead sessions.
Glen is survived by his children: Jeff (Marie) Kemp of Oshkosh, Terese (Terry) Gerhardt of Hartsville, South Carolina, Ellen Kemp (Diane Peterman) of Fond du Lac, Julie (John) Ackerman of Oshkosh, and Dr. G. Joseph (Sue) Kemp Jr. of Fond du Lac; grandchildren: Spencer (Ellen Kenney) Gerhardt of Los Angeles, California, and Teena (Matt) Hedden of East Lansing, Michigan, Anne Ackerman of Oshkosh, Joseph (Sarah) Ackerman of Fredricksburg, Virginia, Alex Ackerman of Oshkosh, and Katie, Brian, and Amy Kemp of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
Glen was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Joan M. Kemp of Algoma, Wisconsin, parents Edward and Ella Kemp and his sister Madeline Kohlbeck, of Algoma, Wisconsin.
A memorial service will be held at 5:30 P.M. on Monday, November 28, 2011, in the Bill Behring Commons of Lourdes High School, 110 North Sawyer Street. A time for sharing memories and support will be held in the commons from 4:00 P.M. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established.
