Gordon K. "Corky" Montgomery, age 97, of Oshkosh, returned to the Lord on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center. Corky was born on April 26, 1916, in North Fond du Lac, the son of David and Harriet (Kolb) Montgomery. A graduate of Oshkosh High School in 1935, Corky attended Oshkosh Business College where he completed the Accounting course, graduating in 1937. It was there that he met the love of his life, Bernice "Bunny" Lindsay. They were married on August 30, 1941, and Bunny preceded Corky in death on December 6, 2012.
Employed for 42 years at Brickham Stamping Company, the last 37 years as plant manager, Corky retired in 1979. He enjoyed playing basketball, golf, and attending Packer football games whenever possible. Corky was a member of the Oshkosh Masonic Blue Lodge # 27; Commandery #11, Knights Templar Tyrion Chapter #15; Winnebagoland Shrine Club; and the Tripoli Shrine Temple of Milwaukee. He and Bunny were members of First Congregational Church since 1941.
On April 23, 1942, Corky was drafted into the U.S. Armed Services, completing Basic Training in the U.S. Air Corps at Greensboro, North Carolina. He was assigned to the 871st Airborne Engineers Battalion at Port Moresby, Australia, constructing air strips. He later was deployed to New Guinea and to Clark Air Field in the Philippines. Corky was honorably discharged from active service on December 21, 1945.
From December of 1979, Corky and Bunny were residents of West Palm Beach, Florida, during the winter months. They permanently returned to Oshkosh in May of 2003.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Mary Sue (Ken) Deutsch, Diane (Gary) Villnow, Monty (Nancy) Montgomery, David (Priscilla) Boughton, Shirley Woolsey, Jean (Ron) Zunker, Alice (Ed) Eisendrath, and Rev. Ken (Peggy) Schaub. Preceding Corky in death is his wife, parents, and infant child, brother and sister-in-law, Donnie and Irene, and a sister and brother-in-law, Athene and Gordy.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in Evergreen Chapel, 1130 N. Westfield Street, with Reverend Ralph DiBiasio-Synder officiating. Entombment will be at Lake View Memorial Park. A time of visiting and sharing of memories will be held on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Evergreen Chapel.
