Harold J. Cumber, age 88 of Oshkosh passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, September 6, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center. He was born in Brussels, Wisconsin on July 9 1920 to William and Emma (Gilson) Cumber.
Harold was a certified welder at the shipyards in Sturgeon Bay, where he met and married Cordelia Deaubl. They lived in Youngstown, Ohio, then Athens, Wisconsin, before settling in Wausau where he raised his family and worked at Wausau Steel. They moved to Oshkosh in 1972 where he continued his trade as a welder at Mathwig Manufacturing.
Harold, a loyal Packer fan, loved football. He also enjoyed country music, singing, fishing, cribbage, and solitaire. He was an avid bird watcher and reader of western novels.
Harold is survived by his children: Barbara (James) Rice, Wayne Cumber, Daryl (Sharon) Cumber, Alan (Donna) Cumber, Steven (Patricia) Cumber, Gary (Carol) Cumber, Patricia Cumber (Jay Robinson), Lora Bartlett, Kevin (Linda) Cumber, and Rebecca (Peter) Garcia; mother of his children, Cordelia Cumber; 27 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Harold was preceded in death by his daughter, Sylvia Sue Vassar; son-in-law, Terry Lee Vassar; granddaughter, Bobbi Jean Cumber; great-granddaughter, Athena Cumber; parents; and siblings: Harry Cumber, Gladys Michelson, and Alice Marx;
A time of visiting and sharing memories will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at Seefeld Family of Funeral Chapels, 1025 Oregon Street, from 1:00 P.M. until at 3:00 P.M.
