Hilbert G. Schumacher, age 84, of Oshkosh, died Wednesday afternoon, December 7, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center. Born in the Township of Nekimi on March 30, 1927, to Gerhard and Edna (Baerwald) Schumacher, Hilbert married Myrtle E. Naffin on November 12, 1949, in Van Dyne.
A long-time employee of the Soo Line Railroad, Hil retired from railroading in 1985 as a car man. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Nekimi where he served on the church council. An avid trap shooter, Hil was a member of Van Dyne Sportsmen Club. He also enjoyed time deer and duck hunting, crappie fishing, and a round or two of golf. A true Wisconsinite, Hil was an avid Packer fan. He was known as the neighborhood "Mr. Fix-It" as there was not much he couldn't repair. A wonderful grandfather, Hil was also the neighborhood grandfather to those children around him.
Mourning Hilbert's passing is his wife of 62 years, Myrtle Schumacher of Oshkosh; four children, Claire Lotto of North Fond du Lac, Steve Schumacher of Hawaii, Paula (Mike) Bergner of Green Bay, and Jack (Cheri) Schumacher of Oshkosh; six grandchildren, Zachary Lotto (serving in the National Guards), Joe Bergner, Laura Bergner, April, Kayla, and Megan Schumacher; three siblings, Carol Miller of Oshkosh, Arlene Zarling of Oshkosh, and Leon Schumacher of Oshkosh. Preceding Hilbert in death are his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 11, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. in St. John Lutheran Church of Nekimi, 491 Old Oregon Road, with Reverend James Reiff officiating.
