Irene M. Lewis, age 96, of Oshkosh, died Friday morning, August 8, 2014, at Evergreen. She was born on February 22, 1918, the daughter of Ray and Matilda (Hein) Lewis. Irene served her country in the U.S. Army with the rank of First Lieutenant, serving overseas in France and Great Britain, as a Registered Nurse. After her service, Irene was employed as a Registered Nurse in Port Washington and Green Lake Counties until coming to Winnebago Mental Health Institute before her retirement.
An avid reader, Irene also enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens. She was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Parish, the Altar Society, Catholic Women, and a life-long member of the American Legion.
Survivors include three nieces, Carol (Gerald) Johnson of Oshkosh, Diane Stein of Greenfield, Wisconsin, and Theresa Zabkowicz of Greenfield, Wisconsin; a nephew, James Frank of Penn Valley, California; a great-niece, Suzanne (Jeffrey) Schumerth of Davey, Florida; two cousins, Helen Donovan and Bernita Utic, both of De Pere. Preceding Irene in death are her parents and two sisters, Florence Frank and Mildred Stein.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at 4:30 p.m. in Evergreen Chapel, 1130 N. Westfield Street, with Reverend Mathew Simonar officiating. A time of visiting and sharing of memories will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Evergreen Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.seefeldfuneral.com.
