Obituary

James William Unger died Wednesday evening, August 22, 2007 at Theda Clark Medical Center. He was born in Marshfield on April 1, 1921, to Adolf W. and Ethel L. (Smith) Unger. On August 1, 1948 he married Dorothy Kalbus.

James graduated from Neillsville High School. He received a Bachelors of Science in 1942 from Wisconsin State College in Stevens Point. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1942 to 1946 in the European Theater. He worked as a radar maintenance technician in Rhineland and Central Europe. Before returning to the United States, he attended the American Army Services University in Biarritz, France.

When James returned home, he attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He received a Masters Degree in Biology in 1948, and taught at Hope College in Holland, Michigan from 1948 until 1952. He received a PhD from U.W. Madison in 1953, and in that year he began his 30 year career as a Professor of Biology at U.W. Oshkosh. In 1975 James was invited to present a research paper at a meeting of the International Botanical Congress in Leningrad, USSR. He retired from teaching in 1983.

James was a member of First Congregational Church. He was a charter member of the Lakeshore Kiwanis Club and periodically served as its president. Other organizational memberships included Sigma XI, U.W. Oshkosh Retired Faculty Association, Oshkosh Citizens Advisory Committee, Oshkosh Parks Commission, and the Oshkosh YMCA.

James is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy; his daughter, Ann Leslie; nephew, David Unger; and nephews, Jeffrey and Rodney Kalbus and their families, who reside in Ohio. His parents and brother, Robert (Mary) Unger preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held in celebration of the life of James Unger at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 8, 2007, at First Congregational Church, 137 Algoma Blvd., with Reverends Ralph and Carol DiBiasio-Snyder officiating. Family and friends are invited attend a time of gathering and sharing of memories, at the church on Saturday from 12:00 noon until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, tributes in memoriam of Jim may be given to the: University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh Foundation Scholarship Endowment Fund.
