Obituary

Jane S(houp) Davis, " AKA Elizabeth Jane Davis", a resident of Harmony Village Assisted Living in Stevens Point, died Saturday evening March 12, 2005 at the age of 95 years. She was born February 14, 1910 in Duluth, Minnesota the daughter of George L. Shoup, Sr. and Katherine C. Wagenaar. She was the Widow of L.M. ("Doc") Davis, a newspaper editor in Ottowa, Il., for many years; they had no children. She is survived by 3 nephews: Michael G. (Nancy) Shoup of Brenham, TX, Stefan P. (Jane) Shoup of Big Falls, WI., & Craig N. (Cynthia) Shoup of Overland Park, KS., Sister in law: Corelli Nelson Shoup of Stevens Point, WI., her dear friend; Clara Tompsett, of Winter Park, Fl., other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother, George L. Shoup, Jr. (1906-2002).

Ms. Davis was administrator of Pawating Hospital in Niles, MI, for 31 years until her retirement in 1977. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, she received her Master's degree in hospital administration from Northwestern University in 1946. At Northwestern she received the MacEachern medal for "exceptional achievement in the study of hospital administration." During her years as Administrator at Pawating, Ms. Davis oversaw four major construction projects that increased the total bed capacity from 25 to 179 at the time of her retirement.

Since 1956 she has been a Fellow of the American College of Hospital Administrators. She served as second vice president of the Michigan Hospital Association and was twice president of the Southwestern Michigan Hospital Council. In 1972 she received the Michigan Hospital Association's "Key Award" for meritorious service.

Ms. Davis' life was highlighted by service to community and her extended family and many friends. She retained a keen interest in literature, music, art, travel, and preservation of the environment throughout her years. A private family service will be held at a later date.
