Janet C. Metko, age 78, of Oshkosh, died Thursday evening, December 15, 2011, at Aurora Medical Center surrounded by her family. Born on September 21, 1933, in Oshkosh, the daughter of Fredrick and Christine (Gerlach) Heinbigner, Janet married Kenneth J. Metko on August 29, 1954, in Oshkosh. Kenneth preceded Janet in death on October 4, 1985.
A life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church in Oshkosh, Janet was employed by Park View Health Center as a nurse's aide until she retired to take care of her grandchildren. She later worked at Summit House and as a day-time home companion for the elderly. Janet enjoyed cooking, baking, word search puzzles, and baseball (especially the Milwaukee Brewers). Janet's true gift in life was that of a caregiver.
Left to mourn her passing is a daughter, Roxanne (Daryle) Hazen of Oshkosh; a son, Kurt (Linda Hartman) Metko of Oshkosh; four grandchildren, Nathan (Stephanie) Hazen, Brooke Thompson, Kate Thompson, and Nichole Metko; a sister, Christy (Rev. Jack) Koch of Pine City, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Janice Albrecht; a brother-in-law, Charlie Koehn; and several close nieces and nephews. Preceding Janet in death is her husband, parents, a daughter, Jodee Thompson, a grandson, Jacob Beck, and three siblings, Delores Auclair, Lenore Koehn, and Leonard Heinbigner.
Funeral services for Janet will be held on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, 400 North Sawyer Street, with Reverend Jeffrey Knoll officiating. Interment will follow the services in Lake View Memorial Park. A time of visiting and sharing of memories will be held on Tuesday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church.
