Obituary

Jean Diane (Raatz) Johannes was born to eternal life at her home in Oshkosh, WI, with family by her side on April 30, 2024. She was born September 20, 1934, in Wautoma, WI to Lauraine (Sauerbrei) and Richard Raatz.

She left Wautoma to pursue a career in clerical work in Milwaukee, WI. While waiting for a bus, Frank Johannes of Wautoma saw her and that was the start of their courtship. They were married at Peace Lutheran Church in Wautoma on November 14, 1953.They made their home in Milwaukee and raised a son, Robert and daughter, Deborah.

Jean's first job in food service was as a car hop. When her children started high school, she began a lifelong career as a waitress. First at Dutchland Dairy, Boston Store's Purple Skillet and at Gritz Pazazz as a banquet waitress.

Jean and Frank loved vacations up north and camping and dreamed of owning a house on a lake someday. Their dream came true in 1986 in Midlake in Woodruff, WI. Jean began working at the Pointe Hotel in Minocqua as a housekeeper, then advanced to the Head of Housekeeping. Next, she began working at Dan's Minocqua Fudge and became the assistant manager. Frank's health declined from COPD, so they moved to Oshkosh to be closer to family.

She enjoyed planting flowers and making fleece blankets. Her favorite television shows were Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Her favorite vacation beaches were in Florida and the Gulf Shores in Alabama. Family was very important to her, and she loved being a part of all family events. She enjoyed cooking and baking for all holidays and made sure to make everyone's favorite food.

She is survived by her son, Robert (Jan Erdman) Johannes; daughter, Deborah Braatz; four grandchildren, Daniel Haefemeyer, Julie (Joe) Whiten, Nicholas Johannes and Sara (Tom) Broach. She is further survived by her great-granddaughter, Magnolia Whiten; two sisters, Janice Dumonson and Judy (Gary) Oleson. She also has five grand-dogs, Bailey, Bella, Joy, Layla and Mabel. She has many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She also had a special friendship with Margarite Johannes and a very dear friendship with Gloria and Sandy from church.

Preceding Jean in death are her parents; husband, Frank on April 20, 2010; four brothers, James, Jerry, William and Thomas Raatz; son-in-law, James Braatz; niece, Alexis Roloff; and nephew, Matthew Raatz.

The family would like to thank Lori and Krista, who were Jean's caregivers. They were a constant support to our mother and our family. Jean stayed in her home while living with Brain Cancer. Aurora at Home Hospice was very helpful.

Visitation will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 338 N. Eagle St., Oshkosh, WI, on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, from 9:00am to 11:00am, with service to follow.
