Joan W Smith passed away the morning of Wednesday March 12th at Evergreen Manor. She was born on March 14,1938 in Evanston, Illinois to Henry F. and Helen S. Williamson.
Joan grew up in Evanston and at the age of 2, Joan met her friend of 85+Yrs, Jeannie Depue. Much of Joan's childhood included spending summers with Jeannie at the Depue ranch in Wyoming which developed into a love for horses. The stories she shared about growing up included many shenanigans in her Evanston neighborhood and lots of reprimands for too much talking and giggling.
While attending college Joan met her future husband, Ed Smith. Upon graduation they married on August 27, 1960. Together she and Ed lived in several cities as Ed finished his graduate studies. Joan supported them during this time by typing papers for fellow graduate students.
After living in Normal, Illinois for 8 yrs they settled in Oshkosh in 1972.Joan absolutely loved children and animals. In addition to the 5 children, she and Ed had they were also foster parents to over 30 children. The family always had an array of shelter dogs to add to the commotion of life at the Smith's.
Her passion for horses was passed down to her daughter Julie and together they spent many years riding together and traveling to horse shows around the country. This was a source of much joy and tons of laughter.
Joan was very active in the Episcopal Church at both the local and diocesan levels. This included Bible Studies, Cursillo weekends and supporting Ed in his ministry.
In addition, Joan was known for her baking and her 'Joanie bars' were always a hit with friends and family. As an avid knitter she created beautiful sweaters, afghans and scarves, many of which were donated to hospitals and shelters. Joan always enjoyed reading and in her later years she also spent time 'puzzling' and playing dominos with friends.
Joan's greatest gift to her family was showing us how to develop friendships. She had numerous friendships spanning 50+ years and cultivated friends of all ages and backgrounds. You are a blessing to our family and we are grateful for all of you.
