Obituary

Joseph F. Stieg, age 99, of Oshkosh, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016. He was born in Oshkosh on April 26, 1917 the son of the late Jacob and Mary (Esslinger) Stieg. Joe was proud to serve in the United States Army Air Forces in Italy from 1941 to 1945. On September 17, 1947 he married his wife of 69 years, Margaret Koch. Joe worked for Paine Lumber and later worked as a head custodian for Oshkosh School District, retiring after many years. He enjoyed golf, wood carving, notably ducks and birds, training dogs for field trials, where he was a state champion, playing guitar and harmonica, and often dancing with Margaret. Further, he was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, which included some friendly dart ball. Joe will be remembered for his generous nature and unique sense of humor.
Joe is survived by his wife, Margaret; children: Maureen (Milton) Oldenburg of De Pere and Gary (Patti) Stieg of Oshkosh; grandchildren: David (Lauren) Oldenburg, Carrie (Devin) Gillman, Michael (Annie) Oldenburg, Rebekah (Joshua) Knuth, and Kevin Stieg; and six great-children: Graham and Nigel Oldenburg; Caitlyn, Ethan and Megan Gillman; and Henry Oldenburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers: Romey, Jacob, Leonard, Carl, Gilbert and Harold Stieg; and four sisters: Della Siebold, Caroline Bubolz, Dorothy Fugleburg and Lucille Gehrke.
The visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 338 N. Eagle St., Oshkosh, with Rev. David F. Pagel officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park.
Joe's family would like to express their deepest appreciation for all the loving care given to Joe over the past 14 months from the entire staff at Parkview Health Center. They are truly a remarkable group of Angels. A special thanks to Missy, better known to Joe as "The Sergeant," always making sure he didn't miss any activities. He freely advised her on how to improve her decorating skills, inside and out. Because of all of you, he was able to live his life to the fullest each day. Thank you very much!
