Kathryn May Vonderloh, 87 of Omro, passed away peacefully at Eden Meadows in Oshkosh on January 7, 2015. She was born on December 14, 1927 in Campbellsport, WI with the help of a mid-wife to Jefferson Chester McAuly and Carrie Ameila Wiedemer McAuly. Kathryn was the youngest daughter of a farming family, having six brothers, and one sister, with Kathryn being the last of this generation to pass. Her childhood was filled with wonderful memories of growing up in Ripon on a farm, helping with chores, collecting chestnuts, getting eggs , or helping Grandma with the inside chores. She was lucky enough to have been raised by three generations living in one household at one time, including eight kids, 2 parents and 2 grandmothers. Kathryn started school with her siblings in a one room school house. Of the 23 students, 8 were Mc Aulys. They had packed lunches of lard or radish sandwiches. Kathryn was the only family member to graduate high school. Kathryn used to tell stories about her grandmother while living in Waupaca, having to give loaves of bread to keep the Indians away. Kathryn's grandparents are the oldest known grave markers in Waupaca Co. Katheryn's brother Don was in Germany during WW II and he brought back an accordion for Kathryn as a gift. Mother not knowing one note, would sit out on the country porch and play, learning all by ear. Our family has many fond memories of our mother playing her accordion. At Christmas it was mandatory she pull out the accordion (which she did begrudgingly). Our greatest joy was listening to our mother play the accordion for our sister, days before her passing in 2013. The smile on our Carol's face was something none of us will forget Kathryn met John Vonderloh at a canning factory in Ripon, and was quoted as saying, "he is a wild one and not the one for me, and he drives to fast." Well, we know how that turned out. John and Kathryn were married on August 25, 1945 in Fairwater, WI. They lived in Ripon then Omro, before buying their home in Omro in 1958. They raised 7 children at the Michigan Street home. Kathryn was very proud of her modest home that had good neighbors and was close to town. John passed away in July 1975, while on vacation with family in Nashville TN, he was 48. Kathryn's employments included factory work at Standard Kollsman, she tended bar at Becks Pizza (the Original), The Friendly, Charlie's, and the Drop Zone. Kathryn was one of the first families in Winnebago County to take in foster adults, and did so for over 20 years. She also was involved with the Big Sisters program. As a foster Grandmother, she would go to school and read and help students at reading. Kathryn was a member of St. Mary's Parish in Omro and helped with the funeral luncheons. She was on the prayer chain for St. Mary's. Kathryn loved the Brewers, as she watched each game, she would rattle off the stats to you. On her 87th9 birthday, she received from the Brewers a signed baseball and a letter from her favorite player, Lyle Overbay. She loved to bowl, and bowled in leagues for years. Her love for reading kept the Omro Library quite busy ordering a new book or seeking out a good author. Kathryn also enjoyed her yearly gambling trips with Fern, Lee and Lorraine. At age 67, Kathryn went camping for her first time, in a pop up camper, eventually, son Stu bought a 32 foot camper in Montello. Finally, Stu and Sam built a cottage on Lake Puckaway. Kathy thought that made camping much easier. She loved her time at the lake. The Amish bakery was never an option to drive by, we would stop for her favorite, custard pie every time. Kathryn was a card player beginning with her parents, then with her brother in law and sister who came every Sunday night. She had her weekly card group, and in between she would have friends and neighbors (Pat and Florence) over for a card game. She excelled at cribbage and played up to a couple weeks ago. Kathryn is survived by her children, John (Penny) Vonderloh, Sharon (Scott) Wolff, David (Debby) Vonderloh, Mark (Sandy) Vonderloh, Stuart (Sam Rumoro) Vonderloh and Lori Schneider. Grandchildren Kari Harvilla-Vonderloh, Kristy (Kevin Kolacki) Vonderloh, Matthew (Mary) Wolff, Tim (Amy) Vonderloh, Erica (Donny) Scott, Michael (Anne) Vonderloh, Jeffery (Gena) Vonderloh and Beth Langkau, and one step grandson Elliot Schultz. Kathryn was also great grandma to Hunter, Logan, Lillie, Austin, Kendra, Sierra, Zoey and Oscar. One son in law, Mark Langkau, and one sister in law Bernice Vonderloh. Many thanks go out to the extended family of Kathryn that were able to see her in her final days, it warmed her heart. Kathryn and family are also overwhelmed with the joy, support and comfort of the friends that took time to see her. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband John, daughter Carol Langkau, her parents, Chester and Carrie, her brothers, Byron, Neal, Donald, Chester, Dale, Ernie, and sister Birdelle Klawitter. Visitation will be held on Saturday January 10, 2015 at St. Mary's Church in Omro from 10:00 until 11:45. The service will follow at Noon. Memorials may be directed to the Omro Community Center, or the Omro Library Building Fund. The Vonderloh family would like to thank some very special people that allowed Kathryn to stay at home for as long as she did. Including, Jim and Pat Kurtz for getting her mail, snowplowing, and checking in on her. Sherry Diedrich and Judy Kahl, who were not only caretakers, but friends she cherished. Also, the Family would like to thank Brad and the team at Eden Meadows. They made our mother and our family feel at home. You made a difference, and we cannot thank you all enough.
