Obituary

Laurel Evangeline McMillan, age 90, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2014 at Webster Manor in Omro where she received loving care. Born in Avoca, Wisconsin on November 13, 1923, Laurel was the fourth child of the late Alvin and Johanna (Olson) Gilbertson. Laurel graduated first in her class from Avoca High School in 1943. On August 10, 1945, she married Sgt. Harris Leon McMillan when he returned from the Air Force after serving in World War II. They raised a family of three daughters and lived most of their lives first in Avoca and then in Omro. Laurel retired from Sherm's Piggy Wiggly in 1988. The following year, just shy of their 44th wedding anniversary, Harris passed away.
Laurel invested in her community. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, served as a certified City of Omro election official, volunteered at the EAA, and worked to improve the reading skills of young children as part of an Omro School System program. Laurel served as historian of the Women's Service League, Treasurer of AARP, and member of TRIAD. In addition, she was a volunteer quilter at Calvary Lutheran Church in Oshkosh where the McMillans were charter members.
Laurel was preceded in death by her beloved husband Harris, brothers Glen Gilbertson (and wife Sal) and Ambrose Gilbertson (and wife Dorothy); her nephew Terry Gilbertson serving in Viet Nam; and two brothers-in-law, Raymond Wisniewski and Claire Steele. She is survived by her sister, Janet Wisniewski of Milwaukee; her sister-in-law Beth Steele of Long Beach, California; her daughters Jill McMillan and her most-beloved granddaughter Evan Laurel McNeal of Omro, Colleen Koch (and husband Ken) also of Omro, and Vickie Millegan (and husband Hal) of Cookeville, Tennessee; and nieces and nephews for whom Laurel had great love and affection.
A memorial service will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church on Wednesday, July 16, 2014. Visitation from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. followed by service with Pastor Tim Routh presiding.
The family sincerely thanks the loving staff of Webster Manor and Heartland Hospice.
