Obituary

Lee F. Weigert, age 87, died Saturday, May 14, 2005 at Green Lake Manor. Lee was born on September 10, 1917 in Iron River, Michigan, to Fred and Maud Weigert. He graduated from Marinette High School and received degrees from Milwaukee Teachers College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During WWII, Lee served in the US Army Air Corps and flew 52 missions on B-17 bombers as a gunner, radio operator, and aerial photographer, based in Foggia, Italy. In June 1945, he witnessed the explosion of the first atomic bomb in New Mexico.

In April 1946, Lee married Eileen Rose in Milwaukee. The couple moved to Oshkosh in 1954, where Lee was a teacher and counselor in the old Oshkosh High School and later at West High School. He worked for the Oshkosh School District for 25 years before retirement.

In retirement Lee and Eileen were very active in local history, and gave over 200 slide talks on landmarks, monuments, and historic sites of Winnebago County. Lee and Eileen were also talented musicians and played with the "Big Band" at Bethel Home and other locations for seniors. He was an avid photographer and record setting swimmer.

Lee was a member of Saint Peter Catholic Church, the Oshkosh Landmarks Commission, Winnebago County Historical and Archeological Society, American Legion, Winnebago County Mental Health Association, and a Cerebral Palsy Volunteer.

Survivors include two sons: Steve Weigert of Palm Beach, Florida; Jim Weigert of Ripon; one daughter: Rosemary (Jerry) Carter of Candler, North Carolina; three granddaughters: Rebecca, Julie, and Christina Carter; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Lee in death are his wife and parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 19, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in Saint Peter Catholic Church, 435 High Ave., with Reverend Robert Kollath officiating. A time of visitation and support will be held on Thursday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will be on the Weigert family plot at Forest Home Cemetery in Marinette on Friday, May 20, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Saint Peter Catholic Church or the Winnebago County Historical Society.
