Obituary

Leon Hanneman, age 92, of Oshkosh, died Saturday morning, August 14, 2010 at Bethel Home. Born on May 28, 1918, in Oshkosh to Conrad and Anna (Weise) Hanneman, Leon was the youngest of nine children.
During WWII, Leon proudly served his country as a medic with the U.S. Army. At the end of the war he supervised German POW's while they removed corpses from Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. Leon held the rank of Sergeant in the army at the time of his discharge.
On July 1, 1945, Leon married Dorothy Frank at St. Vincent Catholic Church in Oshkosh. Their marriage was blessed with the gift of a daughter, Lee Ann. Leon was best known for his kind and happy approach to life in both the best and worst of times. He used his business, Leon's Tasty Treats, to spread good-will throughout the city of Oshkosh. Leon shared his success with many organizations in the community, particularly the Ohio Street Civic Children's Parade Association, and many other organizations, of which he chose to remain anonymous. He was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Parish (formerly Sacred Heart Catholic Church) since his marriage in 1945 and also was a member of Florian Lambert VFW Post 1908.
Survivors include his brother-in-law, Arthur Walsh of Oshkosh; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and many, many friends who loved and cared about him very much. Intensely devoted to his family, relatives, neighbors, and friends, Leon will be dearly missed by the many lives that he touched.
Preceding Leon in death were the two loves of his life, his beloved wife, Dorothy, on October 1, 1992 and his daughter, Dr. Lee Ann McCaffery, on April 28, 1988. He is also preceded by his parents, eight siblings, several nieces and nephews, including a nephew, Lloyd Hanneman, with whom he shared a very special bond.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 20, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Jude the Apostle Parish, (Sacred Heart site), 519 Knapp Street, with Reverend William Van De Kreeke officiating. In honoring Leon's wishes there will be no visitation and his cremains will be laid to rest at Lake View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Leon's name to St. Jude the Apostle Parish and the Mayo Clinic Cancer Research Center, to which his daughter devoted the majority of her medical career.
