Dr. Leslie H. Stone, age 85, of Oshkosh, died Tuesday evening, November 7, 2006 at Evergreen Retirement Community. He was born on January 19, 1921 to Reverend Edward and Katheryn (Post) Stone in Eleva, Wisconsin. Leslie served his country from 1942 to 1945 during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Leslie met Marian Wearing and they were married by Leslie's father on August 7, 1948. Leslie graduated from high school in Neillsville, Wisconsin and then went on to the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he got his undergraduate degree in 1948. Next, Leslie attended the Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH, graduating in 1952. Following his internship and surgical residency, he moved to Oshkosh to practice general surgery in 1957.
Leslie was a well-known member of the community. He was a member of the Oshkosh Rotary Club (Downtown) and served as President in 1965. He took pride in being a member of the American Legion. Leslie was a member of Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church. In 1967, Leslie received the Citizen of the Year award from the Oshkosh Jaycees. He also served on the Evergreen Board of Directors and was the Medical Director after he retired. Aside from his community involvement, Leslie was an avid reader, enjoyed golfing, boating, attending concerts and spending time with his grandchildren.
Leslie is survived by his wife, Marian; three children, Dr. John (Meg) Stone of Elm Grove, Marcia (Dr. Wes Janz) Stone-Janz of Indianapolis, IN, and Dr. Thomas (Jenifer) Stone of Shreveport, LA; four grandchildren, William, Robert, Timothy, and Betsy. Further surviving Leslie are two brothers, Paul (Margie) Stone of Oregon, Wisconsin, Donald (Arlene) Stone of California and one sister, Joyce (Harlous) Wilson of Florida. Many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive Leslie. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Robert, Edward and Harlan.
Funeral Services for Leslie will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church. Friends may gather for a time of support and visitation at the CHURCH from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service. Inurnment will take place at Lake View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Evergreen Foundation - Care Assurance Fund, or to the Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church, or to the Mercy Medical Foundation.
