Obituary

Lucille S. (nee Roeske) Habighorst, died at Evergreen Retirement Community on Saturday, January 10, 2009. She was born in the Town of Rosendale on October 7, 1912 to Christoph and Olive (Parks) Roeske. She attended the rural Triangle Grade School and Ripon High School. She then went on to the Oshkosh State Teachers College and taught rural school at the Rosendale Center from 1932-35. On July 15, 1935 Lucille married Lester Struebing and they lived in Milwaukee while Lester attended Marquette Law School. During the war years of 1941-45, Lu did volunteer work for the American Red Cross and received a Presidential citation signed by Harry S. Truman. Lucille and Lester moved to Oshkosh and joined Algoma Blvd. United Methodist Church, where she still belongs. Lester died in 1967 and Lucille married Edgar William Habighorst on April 5, 1969. He died unexpectedly on November 12, 1972. Lu will be remembered for her volunteer work with the Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary, where she was unanimously voted to be a "Life Member" having volunteered more than 11,000 hours. She was also a member of the 20th Century Club and EAA. An avid golfer, Lu was often found often playing at Westhaven and Lake Shore golf courses. She was proud of the many trophies she won through the years. Traveling was another highlight of her life. She made many driving trips to Florida, flew to Hawaii with a retired teachers group, went to Europe for a 3 ? week sightseeing trip, enjoyed 3 cruises to the Caribbean, and enjoyed family trips to Colorado and Boston. She drove her Cadillac, which Edgar got for her, on trips to Canada, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island completing more than 100,000 miles. Surviving Lu are her sister, Bernice Denzin of Ripon; sister-in-law, Helen Roeske of Waukesha; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Peg and Dave Dorow; and Edgar's daughters, Gretchen (Cy) Highlander of Columbus, North Carolina and Nancy Sheldon of Anderson, Indiana along with their children. Lu was preceded in death by her sister, Ora Dettman, and brothers: James, Donald, and Gordon Roeske. A memorial service for Lu will be held at 12:00 Noon, on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Algoma Blvd. United Methodist Church, 1174 Algoma Blvd., where Reverend Barry Yarbro will officiate. A time of gathering and sharing memories will be held the church on Saturday from 10:30 A.M. until the time of the service. Inurnment will be in Liberty Prairie Cemetery.
