Marcella S. Schwertfeger, Oshkosh, passed away early Sunday morning, April 27, 2008, at Evergreen Retirement Community - Manor View. She was born May 6, 1913, in Tigerton, Wisconsin, the daughter of Anna and Otto Voight. She was married to F. Dale Schwertfeger on May 5,1938, in St. John's Lutheran Church in Tigerton. He was owner of the Farmers' Supply Company in Oshkosh. He preceded her in death on March 3, 1995.
Mrs. Schwertfeger graduated from Tigerton High School in 1931 and was valedictorian of her class. She graduated from Oshkosh Business College in 1933. Before her marriage she was employed by the government, working for the Bank Receiver of closed banks in the State of Wisconsin. She also worked for the 1st National Bank in Tigerton, and she was the secretary and bookkeeper for the Tigerton Lumber and Electric Company. After her children graduated from high school, she was employed by the Oshkosh Board of Education as a secretary at Washington School from 1958 to 1977.
Mrs. Schwertfeger was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church for over 60 years. She taught Sunday School and played the piano for the Sunday School service for fifteen years, served as a Spiritual Grandmother for ten years, and was a charter member of Bethesda Auxiliary, serving as president, secretary, and treasurer at various times. She was also a member of Grace Forever Young and Grace Circle.
While her husband was alive, the two of them enjoyed traveling in the United States. They also made two trips to Germany and one to Hawaii, in addition to spending time in Florida each winter. They greatly enjoyed spending time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Marcella took great pleasure in putting on family dinners during the holiday season and throughout the year; she was also an avid Green Bay Packer fan. She remained engaged in social activities and visits with her family and friends throughout her life.
Mrs. Schwertfeger is survived by a son, Karl (Penny) Schwertfeger of Oshkosh; a daughter, Julie (O. David) Sherwood of Champaign, Illinois; five grandchildren, David (Nina) Sherwood of Durham, North Carolina; Steven (Julie) Sherwood of Kirkwood, Missouri; Kristin (Jeff) Cassidy of Grays Lake Illinois; Mark Schwertfeger of Oshkosh; Dale (Beckey) Schwertfeger of Marinette, Wisconsin; and nine great-grandchildren, Ariann, Gabrielle, and Alyssa Schwertfeger of Oshkosh; Ryan and Megan Cassidy of Grays Lake, Illinois; Stephanie Schwertfeger of Marinette, Wisconsin; Anne and Elena Sherwood of Kirkwood, Missouri; and Kai and Noa Sherwood of Durham, North Caroline. Three step-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren also survive her.
Mrs. Schwertfeger was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Raymond Voight; and her husband, F. Dale Schwertfeger.
The family is especially grateful to a niece and her husband, Mary Ellen and Jerry Schuhart, for their extraordinary love, devoted care, and support of their "auntie"; to Delores Peck and Gloria Wachholz, who visited our mother frequently; to her daily caregivers, who made it possible for Mother to live in her own home until just three weeks ago; to the pastors of Grace Lutheran Church and Tad Mandeik, who made frequent, thoughtful home visits; and to D. Ammar Alzoubi for his thoughtful care during the later years of Mother's life.
A visitation for friends and relatives will be at Grace Ev. Lutheran Church, 913 Nebraska Street, Oshkosh, on Thursday, May 1st, from 1-3:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Chadwick Graham officiating.
