Marlene Marie Herzing (nee Zwilling) was born December 23, 1939, the seventh of nine children. She was the first in her family to graduate from high school, and earned a bachelor's degree in social science from St. Cloud University and a master's degree in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
She took great pride in the fact that over the years she taught grade school, high school and college. Before retiring in 2000, she spent more than ten years as a buyer for Miles Kimball Company. After retirement, she was deeply involved in Learning in Retirement, acting as one-half of a husband/wife team that did a series of popular "Flawed but Famous" presentations on major historical figures.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Tom; her four children: Mark (Suzanne), Lisa Burgess, Paul (Simone Sohsalla) and Rachel; her grandchildren Alex, Grace and Nora; her brother, Matt, and three sisters – Doris Pinault, Verna Schroeder and Lois Zwilling.
A memorial ceremony for Marlene will be celebrated at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, 830 South Westhaven Drive, on Saturday, September 27, 2014. Visitation will take place from 9-11a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Oshkosh Public Library – which she dearly loved – are requested.
