Marlyn H. Rothe, 87, of Oshkosh passed into eternal life Friday morning, September 14, 2007. Born in Weyauwega on December 5, 1919, the third of nine children to Elsie (Long) and Oscar Rothe, Sr.
On October 4, 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an airplane and engine mechanic, then flight maintenance gunner, top turret gunner on the B-26 aircraft, then Crew Chief supervising 175 mechanics, sheet metal workers, welders and mechanics in the repair and re-building of the B-26 airplane. In the early days of the war he was issued two flight wings. Marlyn participated in 44 missions as Flight Engineer Top Turret Gunner on a B-26 in battles and campaigns that included the Tunisian, Sicilian, Naples, Foffin, Rome, Arno and No. Appennines P O Valley campaigns. Beyond his decorations and citations, he also received the Purple Heart for war wounds. He was honorably discharged September 5, 1945.
May 26, 1944, he married the former Regina Dobish, in Oshkosh and together they celebrated 63 years of marriage this year. He is survived by his wife, Regina; two daughters: Marilyn Regina Gardner (David), Green Bay, and Kathleen Margaret Chapin (Brent), Lakewood WA; one son, Daniel Paul Rothe (Melinda), Winneconne; four grandchildren: Kathryn Gardner, Kristin Bass (Jason), Paul Rothe, and Melissa Schutte (Jesse); two great-grandchildren: Jaidin and Damon Bass. He is further survived by three brothers: Ralph Rothe (Shirley), Ernest Rothe (Dolores), and Oscar Rothe, Jr. (Alice); and three sisters: Betty Szep, Vivian Chapin, and Joyce Roeder (Roy), all of Oshkosh. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Merle, sister Violet, and infant son, Daniel Howard.
Visitation will be held at the Seefeld Family of Funeral Chapels, 300 N. Eagle Street, Sunday from 2 until 6:00 PM and Monday from 10:00 AM until time of service. Funeral service will be held at the Seefeld Eagle Street Chapel on Monday, September 17, 2007, at 11:00 AM, Rev. Daryl Marco officiating.
