Mary J. Newton, age 77, of Oshkosh, died Tuesday morning, August 26, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center. She was born on October 11, 1930 in Reedsville, Wisconsin to Joseph J. and Clara A. (Cisler) Svatek. Mary married Robert L. Newton on September 26, 1953 in Reedsville, Wisconsin and he preceded her in death on August 29, 1988.


Mary was a Registered Nurse and was employed by Mercy Medical Center as a Nurse Manager until her retirement in 1990. In her "spare-time", Mary was an avid bowler, participating in various leagues in Oshkosh, and was an accomplished baker and candy maker.


Left to mourn her passing are two sons, Kenneth (Lynn) Newton of Oshkosh, and David (Kelly) Newton of New London; four daughters, Mary Kay (Mark) Zuge, Julie (James) Ward, Jeanne (Jeff) Fredrick, and Kristine (Paul) Nitz, all of Oshkosh; ten grandchildren, Josh (Carrie), Shannon, Clara, Jeb, Aaron, Tony, Brian (Holly), Stephanie (Dave), Robert, and Hannah; four great-grandchildren, Lila, James, Zach, and Faith; a sister, Clara Svatek of Manitowoc; two brothers, Frank Svatek and John (Ardyce) Svatek both of Brillion; and three sisters-in-law, Jean Svatek of St. Petersburg, Florida, Eileen Steiner and Shirley Stark, both of Oshkosh. Preceding Mary in death are her parents and a brother, Joseph Svatek.


Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 29, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. in Seefeld Family of Funeral Chapels, 300 North Eagle Street, with Reverend William Van DeKreeke officiating. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park. A time of visitation and sharing of memories will be held at the funeral chapel on Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be given to Mercy Medical Center in Mary's memory.
