Merrill J. Reid, age 91, of Omro, died Wednesday evening, October 8, 2014. He was born March 18, 1923, in the town of Rushford, the son of Forest J. and Grace E. (Miller) Reid. He married Marion H. (Reamer) and she preceded him in death in 2000. Merrill had worked at various jobs throughout his working career. He had worked at Poygan Cheese Factory, was plant foreman for Fox River Manufacturing, was a milkman for Guernsey Dairy Co., owned and operated Merrill's DX and Merrill's Zephyr, was a salesman for Curtis Keys and finally worked at UW Oshkosh in the parking department patrolling and maintaining parking lots. The easiest way to sum up Merrill Reid is that he was a stand-up guy. He was always willing to help and was looked to by many in his life for his leadership. Merrill was a veteran of World War II. He served in the 10th Mountain Division in Italy. In an area known as Purple Heart Valley, Merrill was a familiar face. On one specific mission, he was chosen to lead a group of men to recover ammunition from trucks stranded in German controlled Purple Heart Valley. Merrill and his team had to quietly work their way down to the stranded trucks, transfer all of the ammunition out, and bring it back. Under mortar fire, Merrill successfully lead his men out with no casualties. This is just one of many of his contributions to all of us. For this particular mission he received a bronze star.Once back from the war he moved to Oshkosh where he settled down and started a family. A family which he helped in immeasurable ways, countless times. Merrill was the work horse that kept his family afloat during difficult times. He never said no to a loved one in need and always sacrificed any free time to ensure those he loved had the help and support they needed. And always at the time they needed it.The family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home on Thursday, October 16, 2014, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Randy King officiating. Merrill will be laid to rest with Military Honors next to his wife at Rushford Cemetery.Merrill was truly a great man and a poster-child for The Greatest Generation. He will always be loved and missed. Merrill has earned honor and respect from us all.We love you and will bear your wisdom, life-lessons, work ethic, and unconditional love as a commemoration to you as we pass it on and teach it to those after us. Rest in peace Merrill, you have earned your time to rest many times over; and we all appreciate it.
