Mildred Edith Turner, owner of WEE CARE CHILDREN'S CENTER in Omro, and a retired Kindergarten Teacher in the Omro School System, passed away on Friday, December 7, 2007. She is survived by her WEE CARE Staff, both past and present. She is also survived by her special friend, Edward Coumbe, Helen Johns, Florence King, Gale Pierce, Gerri Raddatz and Millie White. Ms Turner was born on January 11, 1926, the daughter of Angeline and Jewett Turner. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Leroy. Mildred graduated from Omro High in 1944 and went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree at Oshkosh State Teacher's College. In 1949, she started her teaching career at Liberty School, a one room rural county school. She went on to teaching kindergarten for two years at Plymouth and two years at Ripon. While working as an elementary school teacher, she still had time to study and get her Master's degree in 1962. In 1988, Mildred retired from the Omro School District after over thirty-four years of service. Mildred saw a need for child care in Omro and developed WEE CARE CHILDREN'S CENTER, which opened in 1973.
Ms Turner was instrumental in the passage of Early Retirement Legislation for State Employees. She had held offices in various civic and educational organizations and has served four area churches. Over the years, she has the held the position of Pianist at North Rushford Church, Sunday School Superintendent at Eureka United Methodist Church, Sunday School teacher at North Rushford in Eureka, Choir Director at the Eureka United Methodist Church and Waukau Methodist Church and Acolyte Coordinator at the Algoma Blvd. United Methodist Church in Oshkosh. Ten years ago, she donated her collection of Nativities to the Algoma Blvd. Church and the "Legacy of Love" Nativity Museum was established. Ms. Turner was also the proud author of a child's book, "THE LITTLE HOO".
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 10, 2007, at the Omro Funeral Home, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church, 1174 Algoma Blvd., Oshkosh at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Barry Yarbro officiating. There will be a time of visitation at the Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Service. Ms. Turner will be laid to rest at Omro Junction Cemetery. According to Ms Turner's wishes, a memorial has been established at the Omro Community Food Pantry at St. Mary's Church. A special Thank you to the nursing staff at Aurora Hospital and the VNA Hospice program.
