Robert D. "Bob" Mitchell, age 75, of Oshkosh, died Thursday, July 7, 2011, at his home. Born on September 10, 1935, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Dale and Elsie (Morris) Wixon and later was adopted by William Mitchell. Bob married Barbara Bush on March 21,1991 in Oshkosh.
He served his country for over 20 years with the U.S. Navy, retiring as a Chief Boatswain Mate in 1971. An avid hunter and his love of animals and the outdoors lead Bob to be an Alaskan Wildlife Conservation Agent while still serving in the U.S. Navy. Bob was employed by Oshkosh Truck for over 20 years, he retired in 1997 as a Plant Manager. He had a knack for woodworking (especially bowl making) and cooking. His sense of humor created many great story telling opportunities.
Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara Mitchell of Oshkosh; his children, William Mitchell of the Philippines, Laurie Shine of Waterford, Connecticut; two step-daughters, Angie (Shawn) Burwell of Racine and Jackie (Rick) Goldsher of Boca Raton, Florida; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Katherine Mitchell, and their mother, Wendy Hartling of Coventry, Connecticut; siblings, Robert G. (Marge) Mitchell of El Cajon, California, and Sharon (Terry) Danner of Dumfries, Virginia; nieces and nephews, and many close and loved friends.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. in Seefeld Family of Funeral Chapels, 1025 Oregon Street, with Reverend Paul Lidtke officiating. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors. Family and friends may gather at the funeral chapel on Tuesday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. to express their sympathy in Bob's tragic death.
