?? Robert L. Snyder, retired UW-Oshkosh professor, died at 3:17 AM, March 27, 2008 at Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee. He suffered a stroke after surgery. ?? "Doc" as he was affectionately called, was an advocate for students. To him they came first. And if you mentioned "jazz" he could tell you more than you wanted to know. ?? Bob was born in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, June 8, 1928. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1946 and enlisted in the Army until 1948. Bob attended Wartburg College, graduating in 1953. During college his reserve unit was called up and Bob served in the Army a second time. He received his M.A. and PhD from the University of Iowa. ?? From 1954-64 Bob taught at Kansas State, Manhattan, Kansas. In the summer of '64 he was hired to develop a Radio-TV-Film major at UW-Oshkosh. He taught there until he retired in 1993. ?? Bob was known for his voice. For many years he did the public address announcing for home football and basketball games and also the names of graduating seniors at commencement for UW-Oshkosh. Now heaven is hearing that voice. ?? He was an active member of the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association and he was honored in 2001 by being the second educator to be inducted into their Hall of Fame. Bob was also active in Oshkosh Noon Kiwanis. He was chosen as a Rosebush Professor. He served as treasurer for the Broadcast Education Association. ?? "Doc" kept active in retirement by continuing as a disc jockey with his program "Doc's Jazz City" on WRST-FM. He loved giving programs on jazz to Learning in Retirement, Elderhostels, The Clearing and a variety of other clubs and organizations. A high point in Bob's life was having the WRST-FM production studio named after him. He was also an active member of First English Lutheran Church and St. Andrew's Lutheran Church. ?? On July 6, 1952 Bob and Irene "The Hat Lady" Streng were united in marriage. Bob and Irene began international traveling together in 1977 for their 25th wedding anniversary. They were privileged to visit over 20 countries. Family, teaching, music, and reading were important in Bob's life. ?? His survivors include his wife: son Barry and grandson Nicholas of Erie, Colorado; daughter Wendy and Craig Brownell and their three Goldens of Albany, Oregon; son Robert J. and Victoria and grandchildren Ashley and Alexander of Platteville; son Richard and Trudy and grandsons Holden and Aidan of South Milwaukee: his two sisters, Lois and Wayne Selk of Bloomington, Indiana, and Audrey Alpers of Austin, Texas. Other survivors include brothers- and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, aunts and cousins. ?? A musical jazz tribute for Bob will be held at 6:30 PM on Sunday, April 13th, at the Grand Opera House, 222 Pearl Avenue in Oshkosh.
