Sharon Laiten (Hellwig) passed away on August 31 at Aurora Hospital following a short illness.
Sharon was born March 25 1943 to Kenneth and Betty Hellwig. She was the oldest of five
children, followed by Kenneth, Kathleen, Michael, James and Keith. She lived her entire life in
Omro and graduated from Omro High School in 1961. She had three children from her first
marriage, Michael, Mark and Shiela Knaack, and was married to her second husband Michael
Laiten for over 35 years. Their children are Daren and Shari Laiten. She was Grandmother and
Great grandmother to three generations. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband Michael, son Mark, brothers Kenneth and Michael and sister Kathleen.
"Sharon was a unique person. If she didn't like you, you knew it. If she did like you, she loved
you. She was loud, opinionated and crude, yet she loved her cat, Ernie, she loved her friends,
and though she didn't say it, she loved her children. She supported military veterans, the
Salvation Army, the police and animal rights. She had a hard life and too often let her past
dictate her future. Through it all, as her "Little Brother," I loved her.
She was the last connection to the home of my youth, the last person that remembered parking
my baby buggy under a tree in the front yard so she could go for a walk with her friends. She
was the last person that'll remember the times I helped her milk the cows, bale the hay or just
sat in her kitchen talking over a cup of coffee and a cigarette. Gone are the stories of her life.
My sister, Sharon was 12 years older than me. For a time we were each busy with our own
lives, but later after she lost her husband we became close. Often, I was the only person she'd
listen to other than Carla, my mother-in-law. And like Carla, I'll miss her phone calls. She always
called me "L.B." for little brother and I'll miss the voice messages, "L.B., I just called to talk to
you." Her last words to me were" I love you". Myself and daughter Shari, Shiela and
granddaughter Erin Gau kept vigil at her bedside on her final days. After all of her pain, she
passed peacefully with family by her side. ----Keith Hellwig
