Stephen H. Hammond, age 92 of Oshkosh, died at Evergreen Retirement Community on Thursday, June 19, 2008. He was born to Samuel O. and Lucy Rebecca (Leland) Hammond on January 27, 1916. He attended school and became a watchmaker. This endeavor caused him to meet Jeanette Johnson. They married on June 3, 1944. They had been married for 45 years when Jeanette died on March 28, 1990.
Stephen was a member of Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church. He owned and operated a jewelry store specializing in watch and clock repair. He later decided to begin working at Winnebago County Mental Health from which he retired after 25 years of employment. He enjoyed gardening, camping with his family, photography, and traveling with his wife, Jeanette. He was responsible, cared for his family, and had a dry sense of humor. As a true Welshman, Stephen loved music. He was a violinist, a member of the Fox Valley Symphony, and looked forward to attending the Gymanfa Ganu each year.
Stephen is survived by his daughter, Margaret Mortenson; son, Mark (Janis) Hammond; grandchildren: Paul (Lisa) Mortenson, Patti (Ralph) DeDecker, and their father, Charles Mortenson; grandchildren: Renee (Terry) Knutson, Timothy Hammond, Robert Hammond, and Phillip Hammond; great-grandchildren: Kristina, Alex, Ruth, Elizabeth, Terry Jr., Silas, Joy, and Rebecca. In addition to his wife and parents, Stephen was preceded in death by his siblings: Willard (Bernice) Hammond, Lucy (Wesley) Zank, and Mildred "Ona" (Robert) Butler.
Funeral services for Stephen will be held at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at Algoma Blvd. United Methodist Church, 1174 Algoma Blvd. A time of visiting and sharing support will be held at the church on Tuesday, from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service.
