Verlyn E. Schmig of Egg Harbor, WI and Mesa, AZ died on July 17, 2010 at his home. He was born in Monroe County on September 19, 1939, the son of Carl and Velma (Judevine) Schmig. He married Katherine Hilvers on August 18, 1962 in Cuba City, WI.
Verlyn was an educator in the Omro School District for thirty-eight and a half years, first as a middle school science teacher and later as an elementary guidance counselor. He was active in several civic organizations including Jaycees, Kiwanis Club, where he served as president, and Lion's Club. Verlyn played basketball, softball and golf his entire life and enjoyed watching sports of all kinds. He officiated football, volleyball, basketball, and softball. Everyone knew him as an avid Packer fan, hunter, and fisherman.
Verlyn is survived by his wife, Kathy; his five children, Tim (Jane) Schmig of Joliet, IL; Lori (Jeff) Lewis of Phoenix, AZ; Mary (John) Snider of Phoenix, AZ; Amy (Robert) Spielvogel of Cuba City, WI; and Jon (Aimee) Schmig of Minneapolis, MN; and nine grandchildren, Anne, Katie and Claire Schmig; Will, Mary Kate and Sam Snider; and Rachel, Katya and Beto Spielvogel. He is also survived by one brother, Keith (Norma) Schmig of West Salem, WI, and other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and a sister.
Visitation will be held at St. Mary's Church, 730 Madison Ave., Omro, WI at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 23, 2010, followed by a funeral mass at the church at noon.
