Obituary

Viola "Vi" M. Hunt of Oshkosh passed away at her daughter's home on December 7, 2010, one month shy of her 100th birthday. Vi was born in Oshkosh on January 5, 1911, a daughter of Henry Christian and Anna (Mauritz) Bartels. She married the love of her life, Earl K. Hunt on September 14, 1940 at St. John Lutheran Church in Dubuque, Iowa, officiated by Reverend E. Sandrock.
Vi was a lifelong member of First English Lutheran Church of Oshkosh. She joined in 1917 at the age of six. She taught Sunday school, was a member of Elizabeth Circle, Cross Connections Bible study, Christian Fellowship, and Neighborhood Center.
Vi was employed as a secretary at Henderson-Hoyt Company and later worked at the Lemberger Company. She served as the town clerk for the Town of Algoma for six years before retiring in 1977.
She was a member of Bethel Shrine #2 of the White Shrine of Jerusalem and the Nobel Ladies Auxillary of Winnebago Shrine. Vi was also a member of the Oshkosh Museum Auxillary and the Twentieth Century Club.
She truly enjoyed and deeply loved her family. She always said, "I do not have quantity, I have quality." Vi, Earl and their daughter, Holly, loved trailer trips and camping. She referred lovingly to her grandsons as her "snicklefritzes," and her great grandson, Gavin was, "the love of her life." Just a week prior to her death she was told that Gavin would have a baby sister in April; Vi was thrilled! Vi cherished her relatives and her many dear friends whom she called, "her angels," especially, "Ingy", Janet, and Chris. Vi was blessed by their kindness and caring ways.
Surviving Vi is her daughter, Leanne "Holly" (Thomas) Francis Sr. of Oshkosh; grandsons, Jason (Amy) Madel of West Bend and Scott Madel of Chicago; and great grandson, Gavin David Madel of West Bend. They will dearly miss their grandma but will treasure forever, her great love, wisdom, stories, and kindness. Vi is further survived by two step-grandsons, Tom (Kathy) Francis Jr., and Kevin (Sandra) Francis; two step-great-granddaughters, Alyssa and Ashley Francis; step-great-grandson, Jaden Francis; and step-great-great-grandson, Camden Francis, all of Oshkosh. Vi was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl in 2005; and son-in-law, David Madel in 1983.
Funeral services for Vi will be held at 12:30 P.M. on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at First English Lutheran Church, 1013 Minnesota Street, Reverend Nancy Krueger of First English and Vicky Marxen of Aurora Hospice officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather for a time of visiting and sharing support at the church on Tuesday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service.
