William C. "Bill" Fuller, age 99, of Oshkosh, died Wednesday morning, January 7, 2009 at Bethel Home. He was born on December 3, 1909 in Oshkosh to Elmer and Jennie (Hughes) Fuller. On October 8, 1942 Bill married Jessie Pamplin in Austin, Texas.
During WWII, Bill served in the U. S. Army 95th Division, spending part of that time in Germany. After the war, Bill attended Oshkosh State Teachers College and received a Bachelors degree. He then taught junior high science classes at Merrill Junior High School. Bill furthered his education and received a Masters degree by attending the UW-Madison Tent Colony during summers. He then completed further coursework during two summers at Alfred University in Alfred, New York.
An active member of First Congregational Church, Bill participated in the church choir. Bill's many interests included being a volunteer for the Red Cross Bloodmobile, Caretaker for Camp Hiwela, photography, and playing the French horn in the Community Band and Orchestra. As a couple, Bill and Jessie enjoyed bicycling and were members of Spokesmen's Bicycling Club. They also enjoyed spending time at the family cottage in northern Wisconsin. The Meals on Wheels program was close to Bill's heart and he enjoyed driving/delivering meals until he couldn't drive any longer. Professionally, Bill was a member of National Education Association and the Wisconsin Education Association.
Bill's giving and helping nature will be remembered by many, including many former students of Merrill Junior High School and fellow teachers. His devotion, concern, and love for Jessie were steadfast to his death.
Left to mourn Bill's passing are his wife, Jessie Fuller of Oshkosh; three children, Jean (Michael) Young of Fort Washington, Maryland, Tim (Chrys Mursky) of Delafield, Wisconsin, and Anne Fuller of Madison, Wisconsin; five grandchildren, Nathan and Seth Young, Sara, Rene and Jesse Mursky-Fuller. Preceding Bill in death are his parents and a sister, Mary Ellen Gallinger.
A memorial service for William will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009, at the First Congregational Church in Oshkosh. Visitation will be at the church starting at 9:30am until the time of service. Memorial contributions to the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra in lieu of flowers will be gratefully accepted. The Fuller family wishes to thank Bethel Home, especially the staff on 2nd Floor East, for the care provided to Bill over the past year. Additionally, he was thrilled with the opportunity they offered to relate the history and interest in his French horn to a group of other Bethel Home residents.
