Obituary

William D. Greenwald, age 86, of Oshkosh, passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2005 at Aurora Medical Center in Oshkosh. He was born on October 8, 1918 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin to William R. and Ethel (Duklow) Greenwald.
Following graduation from Chippewa Falls High School in 1936, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served four years on the USS Arizona and was discharged in February 1941. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the beginning of WWII, he reenlisted for another four years. He helped commission the USS Cleveland in Philadelphia in 1942, where he met and married Vera J. Welzel.
After his discharge from the navy, he settled in Chippewa Falls, working as a storekeeper (training he received in the navy) at Northern Colony for 11 years. William relocated to Oshkosh with his family and was employed at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh as Stores Supervisor of all supplies. He completed 29years working for the State of Wisconsin.
First and foremost William's life outside of his family and faith, stood for his deep dedication to his love and patriotism for America. In addition, his passion and hobby that expanded 67 years, was his racing pigeons of which he won numerous trophies. He also enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing as well.
William was a member of first Presbyterian Church in Oshkosh where he served as a Deacon. He also was a 50+year member of the Chippewa Falls Masonic Lodge. After the death of his wife, Vera, in 1991, William married Evangeline Knaak-Lemke in March of 1992 in Oshkosh.
Survivors include his wife: Evangeline Greenwald of Oshkosh; two daughters: Suzanne Karakashian and Diane Munkers, both of Portland, Oregon; one son: William D. Greenwald Jr. of Naalehu, Hawaii; six grandchildren: Dawn Dabeck, Amie Youngs, Colleen Patrick, Kevin Patrick, Jonathan Greenwald, and Anna Robbins; seven great-grandchildren: Kelcie, Travis, Isabel, Melechia, Trevor, John, and Jackson; and one sister: Joanne Webb of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. in Seefeld Family of Funeral Chapels, 300 North Eagle Street, with Reverend Thomas Willadsen officiating. A time of visitation and support will be held on Thursday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
