William P. "Bud" Gruse, age 92, passed gently at Aurora Medical Center on Monday, August 20, 2007. Bud was born in Oshkosh on May 28, 1915, to Roman M. and Anna J. (Steinfeldt) Gruse. He grew up in Oshkosh. When he was 18 he joined the Wisconsin National Guard, and later served in the Army Air Corp during WWII. On October 7, 1943 he married Hazel I. Lloyd.

Bud owned and operated the Standard Station, near the Eagles Club, in Oshkosh. Jack Ertmer joined Bud as a partner and later purchased the station from Bud. From the time he was a pin setter at St. Mary's to his final alley at Oshkosh Lanes, Bud was an avid bowler. His love for bowling was only exceeded by his love for his wife and family. He worked for the American Bowlers Association and managed several different bowling alleys throughout his life. After 41 years he finally achieved a 300 game on March 28, 1978.

Bud is survived by his wife of 64 years, Hazel; preceded in death by son, James F. Gruse; survived by daughter-in-law, Judy Gruse the mother of Tammy ("Rudy") Meyer of Oshkosh, and Cory (Neena) Gruse of Winneconne; daughter, Victoria (Anthony) Potratz of Omro the parents of Todd Potratz of Berlin, Mechelle (Robert) Walker of Appleton; and great-grandchildren: Andrew Patterson, Alyssa and Kayla Potratz; Seth Gerberding; Logan, Lucas, and Reagan Walker; Colton, and Carter Gruse; Alexia Gruse and Brieonna Meyer. He is further survived by sisters: Antonella "Nellie" (Arvid) Carrick of Oshkosh, Geraldine Vechardt of Brillion, Agnes Gruber of Rockledge, Florida, and Frank Gruse of Oshkosh. Bud was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters; two brothers-in-law; and one sister-in-law.

A memorial service for Bud will be held at 2:00 on Friday, August 24, 2007, at Seefeld Family of Funeral Chapels, 1025 Oregon Street, with Reverend William Van De Kreeke officiating. A time of gathering for the sharing of memories and support will be held at the funeral chapel on Friday from Noon until the time of the service. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery.
