William E. White, age 89 of Oshkosh passed away Thursday, November 18, 2010 at Aurora Medical Center. Born March 21, 1921 the son of William and Mary (Miles) White, he married Helen Warden on June 3, 1950 in Eau Claire. His marriage of 60 years to Helen was a testament of love, faith and family. Bill was a beloved husband, father, grandparent and teacher. Blessed with a tremendous tolerance, he had an inner kindness that touched all who knew him. He loved his family, a good laugh and times up north at the cottage. He will be greatly missed.
William was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy having served 4 years. Following his time in the service he went on to receive his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and his masters and Phd from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He later taught at Purdue University and also taught and was vice-chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He was Deputy Director of the Coordinating Council for Higher Education and former member of Kiwanis International, Lion's Club, Rotary, Optimist and chairman and vice chairman of the United Way for many years. Bill journeyed over much of the world, but Wisconsin was always his home.
William will be forever remembered and loved by his wife, Helen; children, Sharon (Robert) Gilson of Madison, David (Eileen) White of Madison, Timothy (Ann) White of Ashland, Christopher (Ione) White of Skanee, Michigan; 7 grandchildren and his sister, Betty Lou Roach of Eau Claire. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Alice Bliss and JoAnn Newton and his brother, Norman.
Memorial mass for William will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 830 South Westhaven Drive, with Reverend Douglas LeCaptain officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at church. Memorial contributions in William's memory may be made to the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh for a scholarship in his name.
